Without Identity

If you google tips for starting a new blog, the one piece of advice you'll see over and over is "have an identity." Are you a mommy blog? Great. A food blog? Excellent. Choose a theme, make it yours, and start posting. Rarely will you see any blog experts say that your new blog can be a raging success if it's full of random musings and disjointed content.

I have wanted to be a blogger for a long time. Not because I want blogging to replace my career or because I have dreams of doing feature segments on the Today Show, but because I like the medium of blogging for taking a topic or an idea, diving into it a little bit, and then having a conversation. Yes I know, haters are a part of that, but I refuse to let them win. Come at me trolls!

During my first pregnancy I had a blog to keep family and friends updated on what was going on with the nursery and appointments and all that, because of course everyone was glued to the details of my life and couldn't wait for new posts (eyeroll). Once the baby arrived I switched to a microblog of mostly photos and short captions, again aimed at family and friends. But the kids got older and life got busy, and that blog was abandoned.

Since then I've created a few new blogs. I had one about weight loss because, like pregnancy, everyone is on the edge of their seats waiting to see what I eat for dinner! At one point I thought that since I read so many books I would create a blog of book reviews, but then I realized I could just post those to Amazon or Goodreads and get on with my day.

So instead, this blog was born. Identityless and all. It's my way of sharing things that I think are important. One day you might get a post about parenting, and the next day I might post a recipe. All I can say is I promise I won't post any "here's what we did this weekend" recaps, unless of course they make a specific point worth sharing.

So why did I call it Jack o'Lanterns in January? Mostly because Jack o'Lanterns in July was taken. But also because that name represents the organized chaos that is my everyday life. I might have it together enough to decorate for a holiday, but then forget to un-decorate for months after. So if this blog had to have an identity, it would be organized chaos. I know that doesn't tell you much about what you'll find here, but hopefully it's honest enough to keep you reading. And while I don't think I've ever actually left a jack o'lantern out until January, my roommates and I did keep a dead Christmas tree on our high-rise apartment balcony for months once. Close enough.

Edit: I have since changed the name of this blog, but I loved that last paragraph for so many reasons and didn't want to remove it. You're still going to get organized chaos on this blog, but my theme is a little bit different now, but that's another post for another day. :)
